This tutorial will demonstrate how to acquire comet metrics from image data with the CometScore™

  1. Double-click on the CometScore™ icon to launch CometScore™.

  1. Click File | Open to specify an image file to process.

  1. Select your image file and click Open.

  1. Separate the comets from the camera background. This is accomplished with the Cutoff bar in the control panel. Set the cutoff level so that the comets are "cut away" from the background.

  1. Click and drag a rectangle around a single comet. Release the mouse button.

  1. Position the cursor over the center of the head and click.

  1. The CometScore™ will prompt you for an output file for the comet metrics. Specify the filename and click Save. All data is stored as tab-delimited text, compatible with many third party spreadsheet programs.

  1. The first comet is now scored. Repeat steps 5 and 6.

  1. One visualization option in the CometScore™ is Full Spectrum viewing which increases visual differentiation by a factor of 6. Click View | Full Spectrum to activate this viewing mode.

  1. When all data has been collected, the file may be opened in any text viewer. The data is tab-delimited and is more easily viewed in a third party spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft® Excel.

  1. To open in Excel, rename the file extension to xls and then double-click on the file.
